Help with Digital HD TV Tuner?

I am thinking about discontinuing my cable service and switching to a digital HDTV tuner and just receiving local channels. I live in the country and there is virtually no over the air signal here. What are the chances a tuner work in my area? I don't want to buy an expensive tuner and then not be able to pick up any channels.

Can someone recommend a good tuner that can receive signals from great distance? Is it necessary to buy an "HDTV tuner" or will any new digital tuner automatically pick up HD channels?

Thanks for any help.

You're saying "tuner" but what you're really referring to is an antenna. For starters, put your local info in the first web site below (if you're in the U.S.) and see what TV channels you should be able to receive in your area and what type antenna is recommended. Click the color coded tabs for antenna suggestions for each channel.

If you're in Canada, use the 2nd link.

If you're within 60 miles or so of some TV transmitting towers, there are antennas that will pull them in, depending on the terrain between you and them. It's just a matter if getting the right antenna, properly installed. And since you have cable service, I rather think you are definitely close enough.

Should it turn out that you need a large, deep-fringe antenna, possibly elevated far above your roof and maybe on a rotor, don't be too afraid of the the expense--just consider what your cable bill is going to be for the next year if you don't make the switch. The difference should more than pay for any antenna professionally installed. Good luck.
