With the many various electronic products available to us, it's not surprise that there are dozens of different connections in use. From SCART leads to VGA cables, we're treated with capabilities that range from the basic standard definition with no frills to the high-quality high-definition available on the latest televisions. High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is one of the high-end connections, utilized by many different products, such as DVD players and video game consoles and much more. It transmits the high-definition content from the device in digital form. Specifically, the HDMI cable can convert analog to digital, providing a better image quality. Let's look and see how do HDMI cables work.
The HDMI Connector
The standard HDMI connector is a 19-pin variation. These pins serve a variety of purposes, allowing for compatibility, performance and quality. For example, seven of the pins provide power and communication between other devices. The first nine are focused purely on the conversion of analog to digital through three separate data channels. These channels are governed by three further pins, while two additional pins control the flow of data back and forth through the first nine.
Versions Of HDMI
HDMI has been around for roughly nine years and over this time it has developed with upgrades from version to version. With version 1.0, the standard color gamut, RGB and YCbCr, channel LPCM, 192 kHz, 24 bit audio capabilities, blu-ray and HD DVD resolutions and the Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) commands were all included. The original version was improved four main times with minor updates in between. Version 1.1 focused on the DVD-Audio support, which is a superior form of audio media to the normal audio CD. Super Audio CD was added in a later update, version 1.2 and 1.2a.
The largest update of all was 1.3 as it added compatibility with Deep Color (more than 16.7 million colors), xvYCC (Extended color gamut), auto lip-sync, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) command list was also updated in a minor revision. 1.4 added in ethernet, audio return, 4k x 2k resolutions and 3D video compatibility. With 3D becoming a more mainstream purchase, a new revision to 1.4 brought in higher quality 3D compatibility.

I've found that a place called Fry's Electronics sells them for great deals. And, they go on sale regularly. If you live in the vicinity of one, I would at least check it out.
